University of Alabama has more than 10,000 Native American remains, largest number cataloged by park service

The remains were excavated from Moundville and other sites in Hale and Tuscaloosa counties in the 1930s.

The National Congress of American Indians also issued a resolution in October 2021 urging the University of Alabama to begin returning items to the tribes that claimed them. In November, a delegation from Muscogee Nation visited the university to discuss repatriation. University officials promised to complete the inventory during the meeting in an effort to move forward with returning the remains.

“Consistent with these ongoing efforts, the University made Muscogee Nation leaders aware in a meeting this morning of our desire to further collaborate on their most recent joint request related to Moundville.”
