UpHere Season 1 Review: Carlos Valdes & Mae Whitman Soar In Delightful Musical Rom-Com

A musical romantic comedy might sound good on paper, but it requires a variety of elements to pull it off. Up Here, created by Steven Levenson and Frozen’s songwriting duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, is the perfect mixture of breezy rom-com and energetic Broadway musical.

Up Here has a great setup, and it articulates how easy it can be to listen to the voices that bring self-doubt, self-hatred, and otherwise prevent one from pushing past them to do what they want and feel is right for them at any given point in their lives. In the musical rom-com, it isn’t another love interest or their families standing in the way of Lindsay and Miguel’s happy ending, it’s themselves.
