Jarrod Johnson has only been at UPMC Carlisle for about 18 months, but he’s aware of the community’s changing perspective on the hospital over the last decade.

When then-PinnacleHealth, shortly ahead of its merger with UPMC in 2017, purchased the hospital from Community Health Systems, it was mired in complaints and questionable ER admission practices, stemming from when Health Management Associates had owned it as a for-profit business.

Part of the reason Johnson thinks the patients have returned is the community-feel of the hospital, and the type of environment that drew him to the health system after more than a decade as a CEO in the health care industry. Johnson said that while UPMC’s strength was a primary driver for him to apply, the " UPMC experience” was what led him to want to stay.

UPMC has also tried to stay community-oriented with its implementation of the Street Medicine program, where a UPMC Carlisle nurse attends to the medical needs of the homeless. UPMC estimates that the hospital’s annual economic impact to the region is $212 million, and it dedicated $5.5 million of its $5.9 million community contribution to care for those without means to pay.

UPMC Carlisle this month officially brought its NICU back to Level II to offer better care for infants who need more medical help after birth. Johnson said that’s already resulted in more women staying in Carlisle to give birth, and even bringing a local family back to Carlisle after the mother gave birth at UPMC Harrisburg.

UPMC will also continue its partnership with Harrisburg University to help address one of the biggest challenges that Johnson said the health system is facing: staffing.
