VENICE - Award-winning director Ava DuVernay on Wednesday became the first African American woman to present a movie in competition at the Venice Film Festival, overcoming sceptics who had tried to talk her out of applying.
Origin dramatises how Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist Isabel Wilkerson came to write her best-selling book Caste: The Origins Of Our Discontents , while simultaneously exploring its themes of race and deep-rooted discrimination. “Wilkerson cast a light on that our reader desperately needs to know or else we will be shooting at ourselves without even knowing why,” said Dr Suraj Yengde, an Indian scholar who plays himself in the movie.
