A missile launched by the United States Air Force to shoot down an unknown flying object cost US$439,000 , but its target may have been something unremarkable – a US$12 hobby balloon.

Although the group did not link both events, the balloon’s trajectory suggested a possible connection. US Department of Defence officials had said that the objects did not pose a military threat, but their flight paths and proximity to sensitive sites, as well as their altitudes, were potential hazards to civil aviation, which sparked concern.
