The guard, who almost single-handedly won the Trojans’ NCAA Tournament first-round game in the final seconds, is eager to finish what he started

LOS ANGELES — Eight months ago, Drew Peterson came a fraction of inch from basketball immortality.

A fraction of an inch, and Peterson’s part of basketball folklore. Eleven points in 35 seconds to win an NCAA Tournament game would have been on par with Indiana Pacers star Reggie Miller’s eight in 8.7 against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. But eight months later, Peterson is at peace with the shot.

“Coming off that Elite Eight run [in 2021], you kind of take some things for granted,” Peterson said. “It’s hard to make the tournament, it’s hard to make it each and every round. It’s my last go-around, so I want to end on a good note. I’m hoping we can have a lot of postseason success.” Peterson was also told he needed to add more muscle to his frame to compete with professional players. He ended last season at 184 pounds and spent the summer in the weight room with strength coach Kurtis Shultz and reached 200. Peterson is in the high 190s now and hopes to stay there for the full season.
