The artist mixes the ashes with a resin and the occasional slur of pigment to create a granular material that can be applied to a canvas.

Portrait of Wayne Gilbert in his home studio with his art, Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022 in Houston. Gilbert incorporates cremated human remains into his artwork. When his uncle died several years ago, Wayne Gilbert asked those tending to his mother’s brother if there were any remains available after cremation.

“People want their remains spread at the Great Wall of China,” he says. “Or a remote beach somewhere. But thirteen pounds is a lot. So people take a cup or so. There’s a lot that ends up in closets.” Gilbert recalls a work by artist Dario Robleto that showed in Austin that had some familial remains included.

Gilbert got into painting late in life. He was born in Denver but grew up in Houston when work brought his carpenter father to town. He’s been here since, from childhood on the east side of town and graduating from Austin High School.“The entire experience of drinking yourself to the bottom of the deepest pit known to man, it’s a great jumping off place for understanding the two sides of life,” Gilbert says.

While our culture thinks of death as an exact moment in time, Gilbert finds something more contemplative in the remains. They’re varied in color and texture. His “Rites of Spring” is a mesmerizing work with 10 differently colored browns — all from different remains — serving as the soil for a brilliantly colored rainbow of floral growth at the top of the canvas. The Gilbert home, which he and Beverly bought in the mid-1990s, has found itself on a Heights house tour route before.

Which doesn’t necessarily affect what he does. Gilbert continues to apply his material to canvas to execute a vision. “The idea is to get into the moment as often as you can,” he says. “And if you can’t, you try to get into it anyway…”
