Uvalde votes for Texas governor months after mass shooting
Gun control was a central part of Beto O’Rourke’s campaign against Gov. Greg Abbott after the shooting at Robb Elementary School.

With all 14 Uvalde precincts reporting, Abbott unofficially received 60.27% of the vote versus 31.55% for O’Rourke. Abbott carried the county, which is still reeling from the Robb Elementary School mass shooting where 21 people were killed.Abbott has carried Uvalde in both of his previous elections. In 2018, he won Uvalde by 1,700 votes over Democrat Lupe Valdez. In 2014, in his first run for governor, Abbott defeated Sen. Wendy Davis by 800 votes.
Uvalde has been reliably red for the past several gubernatorial elections and it is unclear the last time Uvalde supported a Democrat for governor. The Texas Secretary of State’s website goes back to 1992 and shows GOP candidates for governor carried Uvalde for all 30 years and seven gubernatorial elections.
But O’Rourke made the mass shooting — the sixth in Abbott’s tenure — one of the central issues of his campaign.
