World No.1 Ash Barty respects the decision of fellow tennis professionals to not broadcast their vaccination status but says rules are rules when it comes to being eligible for the Australian Open.
That looks as if it will spell trouble for Australian Open organisers, given there are suggestions as much as 40 per cent of WTA players and 35 per cent of ATP players are yet to have a COVID vaccine. “I didn’t feel like there was a need for me to tell everyone whether I’ve been vaccinated or not,” Barty said. “I have been vaccinated, I have been all my life. At the end of the day, it’s part of your medical history, there’s no necessity to share it. People make different decisions for different reasons, so you have to respect that.
“We know the team at the Australian Open will make good decisions and make sure the tournament is as safe as possible within the guidelines and the players that are here are going to do a fantastic job. I have to abide by the rules like everyone else,” Barty said.
