Valerie Harper, best known for starring in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rhoda, has died
Freebie and the Beanboth of which earned her Golden Globe nominations. Her later TV work also included roles and guest appearances on series includingIn addition to her work in the entertainment world, she was also a women’s liberation activist, advocated for the Equal Rights Amendment, and in 1983, co-founded L.I.F.E. to help feed the hungry in Los Angeles.
Later in her career, Harper returned to theater, scoring a Tony nomination in 2010 for her performance as Talullah Bankhead inShe battled lung cancer in 2009 and in 2013, she was diagnosed with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, a rare brain cancer. Harper’s husband, Tony Cacciotti,in late June of 2019 that doctors had advised that she be moved into hospice care, but that he couldn’t bring himself to do it.
“For those of you who have been in this position, you will totally understand that ‘it’s hard letting go,’ ” Cacciotti wrote in his social media post. “So as long as I’m able and capable, I’ll be where I belong right beside her.”
