Valparaiso High School English teacher Matt Thomas is one of 10 finalists in the state’s Teacher of the Year competition held by the Indiana Department of Education.
A DOE release said the Indiana Teacher of the Year, who will be announced later this fall, will work to help elevate the teaching profession in Indiana, as well as represent Hoosier teachers at the national level.“I was honored but mostly humbled. I know I’m not actually one of the top 10 teachers in the state — I mean, how would one even quantify that — but I have worked hard for the past 26 years so I appreciate the recognition,” he said.
A former VHS varsity boys’ basketball coach, Thomas said he left high school coaching to coach his own two children, Grace and Owen. “Becoming a teacher is a calling, driven by the desire to make a difference in the lives of students,” said Jenner. “The small, everyday actions of teachers have a profound impact, which can be felt for weeks, months and even years to come.
