Video showing the final moments of Irvo Otieno's life went public overnight. The 28-year-old died March 6; seven Henrico County sheriff's deputies and three staff members at Virginia's Central State hospital are charged with second-degree murder:
Otieno's mother, Caroline Ouko, said her son was treated inhumanely
The video showed attempts to revive Otieno with CPR and an AED, but the family's attorneys say it took too long for resuscitation efforts to begin. This is the latest example of a death of a Black man in custody that has law enforcement under scrutiny. Otieno's death follows the the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, Tennessee, earlier this year, and comes nearly three years after the killing of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis.
