Tuesday at Gainbridge, Pentatonix mixed in some fairly traditional holiday cover songs with their distinctive mashups and a handful of originals.
As Pentatonix, some 28 songs into a whirlwind of a show Tuesday night, returned to the Gainbridge Fieldhouse stage for an encore, the crowd fell deathly silent.
I was a fair-weather Pentatonix fan when the group hit its first wave of viral fame on YouTube about a decade ago. The video that sticks out the most in my memory was the cover of Fleet Foxes"White Winter Hymnal," complete with thigh-slapping, claps and snap choreography. I pondered how many takes were needed to pull that off.
The performance of one of the squad's best Christmas covers,"Mary, Did You Know?", was like listening to an entire orchestra and choir pour out of the mouths of five people. Though this was a sitting down type of show, it received a huge burst of applause. One quick aside: That is the most covered song of my lifetime. We can probably go through this century without another one. But if you're going to do it, do the Jeff Buckley lyrics, which isKevin Olusola is the group's beatboxer, who just so happens to also sing his ass off, dance and play the cello — sometimes all in a single song.
