Over the past decade, Justin Williams has plucked about 80 sea turtles – predominantly...

Justin Williams stands in frozen grass near the shore while looking for cold-stunned turtles Friday, Dec. 23, 2022, along Christmas Bay. Williams and son Trenton Williams didn’t find any turtles in the area, and were hoping the sea turtles had moved to larger and warmer water before the temperature drop overnight.Justin Williams donned waders to begin a frigid winter tradition – rescuing sea turtles near San Luis Pass.

Beds of oyster shells and frozen grass, bent from the chilling northernly wind, crunched underfoot Friday as Williams and his son, Trenton, trekked the mucky shore for signs of cold-stunned sea turtles. The sunshine was deceiving along the Blue Water Highway around noon. The brisk wind whipping off the bay likely dropped the temperatures into the teens, but that same wind is what would steer any helpless turtles to shore. Since that did not happen – he hopes most of the turtle population made it to safety in the gulf.

Others searched Christmas Bay at daybreak Friday and found no turtles. The turtles can be found along 86 miles of shore. If volunteers or others find the cold-stunned turtles quickly enough, they can be saved and released when the weather warms, according to U.S. Fish & Wildlife officials.
