A new report paints an alarming picture of the country’s election infrastructure
SINCE 2016, Donald Trump has tried to sow doubts about the results of an election he won—claiming, for instance, that he lost the popular vote because so many “illegals” voted. Imagining how he might respond if he loses in 2020 is unsettling. Because Americans are so divided politically, they need to have confidence in the electoral process.
Most of those 12 states said they wanted to buy new machines that produce paper ballots, and some have even passed laws requiring that. But that is an expensive undertaking. Since 2015 Congress has distributed $380m in grants to improve election security. But that does not go very far.
The state of America’s voting machines raises two concerns. The first is that old, insecure machines are more vulnerable to exploitation, cyberattacks and tampering. Replacing them with newer machines would be a good first step. The other concern is that rickety voting infrastructure dents Americans’ confidence in the process; the new report comes just 20 months before the next presidential election.
