New details are revealed at a hearing for four of five men accused in a series of arson attacks at Walmart stores in Alabama and Mississippi. An FBI agent says Wells Fargo and Amazon also may have been targets for similar attacks.

A suspect in the Walmart arsons in Mobile, Ala., that occurred on May 27 & May 28, 2021. .A hearing on Wednesday didn’t immediately resolve whether defendants in a series of Walmart arson attacks will be released pending trial, but it did reveal some new elements of the case -- including the allegation that attacks against Wells Fargo and Amazon may have been under consideration.

That left Sean Bottorff and the three younger men to be considered for pretrial release. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kasee Sparks Heisterhagen argued that Magistrate Judge Sonja F. Bivins should order the men held pending trial. Among other things, Heisterhagen said there was a “significant risk of violence and risk to human safety that would ensue should these defendants be released.”

An FBI agent, called to the stand by Heisterhagen, said the document “had a list of seven demands and seven issues” for Walmart to address, or the attacks would continue. Prosecutors have referred to the document as the Walmart manifesto.
