“We aren’t going to stop:” Activists demand more accountability for ex-officer who shot Erik Cantu

Continuing their call for systemic change and justice for Cantu, organizers from the Party for Socialism and Liberalism held a candlelight vigil in the 11700 block of Blanco Road to demand that the former police officer face heightened accountability by having the criminal charges against him upgraded from aggravated assault to two counts of attempted murder.

“We wanted to bring the community together and say that we aren’t going to stop just because Brennand got a slap on the wrist with aggravated assault charges,” said Tori Ramirez, a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. “We hope the people see that the city of San Antonio stands up for its people.

Cantu was critically injured on Oct. 2 after Brennand shot 10 rounds toward the car the teenager was driving. Cantu was sitting in a car in the McDonald’s parking lot, near where the activists gathered, when Brennand approached the car and abruptly open the driver-side door.

The group that gathered outside the McDonald’s Tuesday night had stood outside Public Safety Headquarters on Oct. 11 calling for accountability and justice the night Police Chief William McManus announced Brennand’s arrest.
