The NSW government is making plans to dislodge a tree-lined pedestrian bridge intended to salve the impact of the WestConnex motorway in Sydney’s inner west – before that bridge is even built.

When the third stage of WestConnex – a link road between the M4 and M5 motorways – was approved by then planning minister Rob Stokes in 2016, he insisted that a ‘Pedestrian and Cycling Green Link’ be built above parts of the surface motorway in Lilyfield and Rozelle as a condition of approval.

Buruwan Park, between the Rozelle Bay light rail stop and the Crescent and City West Link, will disappear because of WestConnex. That green link, Mr Stokes insisted, needed to have sufficiently deep soil to allow for a variety of plants. It also needed to be at least 15 metres wide and designed so as to “maximise the safe movement of pedestrians” between parks to be built over the Rozelle Rail yards, and waterside parklands at Glebe and Annandale.

The government says the “green link” - which is intended to partly replace a park, Buruwan Park, which will be claimed by the WestConnex project - will still be built. But that green link would have to run alongside the raised motorway ramp. And it might also have to be moved further away from the water – despite the legal requirement that it connect to waterfront parkland.
