Letter to the Editor: The Republicans aren’t confused about what they’re supposed to do. They know, but don’t want to do it, so they are throwing sand in the gears & thumbing their noses at the public & court. That’s contempt & none of us should accept it
Updated: Feb. 23, 2022, 5:24 p.m. |I supported reforms to Ohio redistricting. I volunteered, advocated and supported the 2018 congressional redistricting reform. I’m upset about reform leaders’ overestimate of how well these reforms and the 2015 state legislative redistricting reforms would work. We shouldn’t have had to endure months of foot-dragging, and probing for loopholes, by politicians who obviously shouldn’t still be part of redistricting.
But that’s no longer the main story. When Ohio voted for these reforms, it voted for rules those politicians must follow, and voted to give the Ohio Supreme Court authority over arguments about those rules. The court has made it perfectly clear what the rules require. No one on the Redistricting Commission still has room for confusion. Even if state Sen. Matt Huffman and other Republicans want to pretend that they don’t know how to draw rules-compliant maps, such confusion wouldn’t explain or justify running out the clock on the court’s deadline and proposing no maps whatsoever.
