Perhaps that’s why she became America’s most ironic and prolific anti-feminist, taking on the likes of Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, and Bella Abzug in her quest to halt—and eradicate—the Equal Rights Amendment. And perhaps that’s why she succeeded., Schlafly , launches a grassroots movement to demolish the ERA before enough states could adopt it. Frustrated by her prior failed attempts to be taken seriously in the political realm, she finds momentum in women’s issues instead.
This is all pulled from truth. Schlafly went to college at Washington University in St. Louis, where she worked nights test-firing guns at a munitions factory, according to the. She then studied political science at Radcliffe University and joined a conservative think tank, all before returning to St. Louis and campaigning for Republican Congressman Claude I. Bakewell. It comes as no surprise he won the race.
In the FX series, Sarah Paulson's Alice McCray—a fictional character who represents several of Schlafly’s allies during the anti-ERA campaign—first brings up the dangers of the amendment to Schlafly in a beauty salon, but she blows it off. But later, while being sidelined in a meeting with members of the Washington elite, Shlafly brings up the ERA, knowing it will get attention. And, of course, this leads to her momentous battle against it.
