As Abbott calls for more state parks, what's next for Palo Pinto, Powderhorn Ranch projects

According to TPWD, it's one of the largest remaining tracts of spoiled coastal prairie in Texas. Most of the land is part of the Powderhorn Wildlife Management Area but 2,253 acres will be developed as a state park.Located in the Chihuahuan Desert in West Texas, the 39,000-acre Chinati Mountains State Natural Area will offer an opportunity for guests to explore the rich natural history of the region.

According to TPWD, humans have lived for over 8,000 years in the Chinati Mountains and have left rock paintings and petroglyphs. TPWD says that opening the park will require several years as the agency must identify sensitive areas, and garner funding. No opening date has been set.
