District 1 Councilman Mario Bravo has six challengers to fend off as he tries for a second term. He had eight when filing closed in February, but two people withdrew from the race. Bravo was one of two council members who received the rare vote of no confidence in November. Bravo received the vote for violating the city's anti-harassment and anti-violence standards when he berated District 7 Councilwoman Ana Sandoval in September.
Mario Bravo was"more left than I would like," but that he preferred Bravo over then-incumbent Roberto Treviño.Perennial candidate Lauro Bustamante, 72, is an attorney. He was elected to the Edwards Aquifer Authority in 2010. He won the Democratic nomination for the 224th District Court bench in 2014 but lost in the general election. In 2008, the State Bar of Texas suspended Bustamante from the practice of law for two years for professional misconduct.
