Volpe isn’t hurt and he was 2-for-4 with no errors in the series-opening win, so he didn’t need a mental blow.
Volpe’s streak came after he won the Yankees’ starting shortstop job during spring training with no big-league experience and only 22 games in Triple-A. Also, he stayed in the lineup even though he got off to a very slow start at the plate. He hit .186 in his first 67 games through June 11. Through the highs and lows, Volpe gained valuable experience playing every game, which is a feat in itself.
