The contemporary Cuban dissident movement is fueled by young people who are fed up with the countries inadequate access to food and electricity, curbs on civil liberties, and the economic strain of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pamela, a teenager in Villa Clara whose name has been changed to protect her privacy, tellsthat she regularly endures tense, emotional conversations with family members about her opposition views. Pamela’s parents are worried about her safety, as an estimatedBoth Pamela and Malaka say they know the risks of publicly expressing anti-government opinions, but are desperate to secure futures with broader opportunities, artistically and financially.
On July 11, Pamela posted on social media about the protests, and then her dad confiscated her phone. “They are silent because of fear, but I don’t have to be," she says. "I’m 18, and I haven’t seen any benefits or advancement yet. On the contrary — what I see is how much my parents sacrifice just to put food on the table every day.”
Food scarcity is a primary source of discontent among Cubans. In January, the Cuban government decided to sell nearly all necessities in U.S. dollars, referred to asOnly those with dollar cards — generally, people who receive money from family abroad — are allowed to enter the majority of stores. Cards are acquired at national banks and filled up with dollars sent by companies like Western Union.
Young people are essential to these transactions, as they are more likely to be heavy internet users and resellers often advertise essential goods like shampoo and deodorant for sale online. Malaka believes this gives young people a detailed illustration of the shortages in Cuba, information that their parents and grandparents may not have access to.
