“My mom would see her as this very glamorous figure disappearing down the hallway,” Cooper says. “It sounds very elegant now, on the outside, but she's an 8-year-old child being moved from hotel rooms, and her mother's going out to parties every night and having all sorts of people through the house. It really was not a stable upbringing.”
As someone who idolized Napoleon—she slept with a copy of his biography on her nightstand—and who, Vanderbilt wrote, “was capable of blowing up subways to achieve her plans,” Morgan was able to stop it, even recruiting Keislich to her cause. Not too long after, in the spring of 1932, Vanderbilt, wearing a rabbit-fur coat and accompanied by Morgan and Keislich, boarded an ocean liner named theand headed to America under the guise of having her tonsils removed. She found herself recovering from the surgery at her aunt Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney’s mansion in Old Westbury, New York. Her father’s sister, Whitney was a famously rich woman, having inherited the Vanderbilt fortune and also marrying into the Whitney family.
She also realized that without any parental rights—she had been too young to legally obtain them when Reginald Vanderbilt died—she was in danger of losing her daughter, and thus her money. So she petitioned the court to become Vanderbilt’s guardian. But her own mother protested—filing a complaint with the court and claiming Morgan Vanderbilt was an unfit mother.
To Whitney, it only seemed reasonable to take her in, saving her from what appeared to be a torturous existence. She decided to petition the court for custody. On its very premise, the custody battle over little Gloria was dirty—it required her grandmother to turn on her mother, and a central accusation was that money mattered more to her than love. As the trial began, it got even dirtier.
