Although the horror comedy The Blackening might be a critical success thanks to its tone and themes, it won't be available to stream soon.
The Blackening brings a good mix of horror and comedy with a talented cast of Black actors, but when will it be available to stream for everyone to enjoy? Directed by Tim Story and based on the 2018 short film of the same name by the comedy team 3Peat, The Blackening is all about the horror movie clichés that have followed Black people for decades.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Blackening takes the audience to a cabin in the woods while following a group of Black friends for a Juneteenth weekend getaway. However, they soon find themselves trapped in the cabin with a twisted killer that forces them to play a game named “The Blackening”. To make it all worse, one of their friends is being held hostage by the killer, so they will have to make some extreme decisions to save themselves.
If The Blackening follows this formula, then it could be available to stream until December 2023. While it would be a lot more fitting for a movie like The Blackening to be released on streaming around Halloween, it seems unlikely that it could be released earlier. Even if The Blackening is a critical and commercial success, it might not be granted an earlier streaming release, so for now, those who miss its theatrical release will have to wait until the winter to finally watch it.
The Blackening Will Stream On Starz As it's being distributed by Lionsgate, The Blackening will have two streaming homes: first Starz and then it will move to Peacock. An agreement made between Lionsgate and Peacock in 2022 gives the latter exclusive rights to Lionsgate's movies’ “Pay 2” streaming window, meaning that after their initial streaming releases on Starz, they will move to Peacock.
