Zion recorded 5,039,835 visits in 2021, the most in park history. That’s an increase of 78.1% in the past decade.
Zion National Park hikers hoping to beat the crowds on park trails wait their tun in line to catch a free shuttle at first light. Every bus leaving the Zion Canyon Visitor's Center in the morning is filled to capacity, carrying some 60 people in each car of the two-car shuttle. "This is nothing," said shuttle host Celeste Fuentes about the endless rows of hikers. "Sometimes it's all the way to the parking lot.
The increase in visitors — up 40.4% from after a big dip in 2020 during the first stages of the COVID-19 pandemic — affected Zion’s landscapes, plants, animals, staff, volunteers and infrastructure, as well as the visitors’ experiences and its partners and neighbors, said Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh.
“Clearly our visitors value their parks and public lands,” he said. “At the same time, intense visitation presents challenges to achieve our mission to conserve the park’s resources and provide engaging visitor experiences.” Zion recorded 5,039,835 visits in 2021, the most in park history.
