Afghan judge who prosecuted Taliban members joins Texas law schools as a research scholar

"Judge H", was an Afghan judge who prosecuted Taliban members in Afghanistan. She is pictured in Fort Worth, Texas on Friday, July 8, 2022. CREDIT: Louis DeLuca for The Houston Chronicle B6414885734Z.1Judge H spent the latter half of her 20s prosecuting and jailing Taliban members in Afghanistan for terrorism and narcotics-related charges. Her work within the counter-narcotics court was critical to hitting the Taliban where it hurt - their pocketbook.

“All the work that I had done it all basically went down the drain. It was all nullified. There was nothing, no hope for me and it was extremely disheartening,” Judge H said through a Dari interpreter. She fled, eventually landing in Texas with her immediate family, and is keeping her identity private for the safety of relatives remaining in Afghanistan.

She said that prior to the U.S. invasion, women faced a lot of persecution by the Taliban. It took courage — and her fighting spirit — to be in this role. Even on hospital and travel forms she wouldn’t specify a job.

Now, safely in the U.S., the family plans to rebuild their lives close to other family members living in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, where they arrived in June. There Judge H will also be able to continue her legal work. “No society will ever live in harmony without the law,” she said. “Without law, there is no way of life, there is no human rights, there is no truth.”
