U.S. and Canadian ships and planes on Tuesday raced to locate a missing submersible carrying five people. The craft disappeared days earlier on a mission to see the deep-sea remains of the Titanic shipwreck.The expedition, operated by OceanGate Expeditions, launched from St. John’s, Newfoundland, on Sunday morning.
The submersible, called Titan, lost contact with a research vessel on the surface one hour and 45 minutes into its dive, Rear Adm. John Mauger of the U.S. Coast Guard said.Dirty Dozen Productions/AFP/Getty Images Harding has undertaken a series of record-breaking challenges in the past. He has gone to the deepest parts of the oceans and flown around the world above the poles faster than ever before. He also went to space on a Blue Origin flight last year.In a Facebook post on Saturday, Harding said he had joined the crew as a mission specialist along with French explorer Paul-Henry Nargeolet.
OceanGate’s founder and chief executive, Stockton Rush, is also aboard the submersible, according to a spokesman for the company.Eric Fusil, a submarine naval architect and director of the shipbuilding hub at the University of Adelaide in Australia, envisaged four scenarios for the submersible. It could have had a power blackout, fire or flood, or it could have become entangled in something, Fusil said.
