Crossguard lightsabers are one of the rarest hilt styles seen in Star Wars, but why haven’t more Jedi and Sith fashioned quillons into their weapons?

One of the coolest aspects of Star Wars is the sheer variety of lightsabers available, and every trilogy seems to add new styles for Jedi and Sith to choose from. The original trilogy created the traditional single-bladed saber, which is by far the most common lightsaber in the galaxy. Then the prequels introduced Darth Maul’s iconic double-bladed saber on the big screen, which really opened the door for Star Wars to get creative with lightsaber variants.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Kylo's crossguard saber reveal copied the prequels, making it a big deal, but it wasn’t the first time a crossguard saber had been seen in Star Wars. The first crossguard lightsaber can be traced all the way back to Star Wars Legends comics from the early 2000s. Of course, it wasn’t popularized until the first Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer showcased it.

In Disney’s canon, the crossguard lightsaber was popularized thousands of years before the Skywalker Saga at the time of the Great Scourge of Malachor. Not a lot of info has been revealed in canon about this ancient battle, but it's generally believed the Jedi attempted to expunge the ancient Sith Empire from the planet. Everyone in the battle was obliterated by a powerful dark side superweapon, including the Sith themselves.

Are Crossguard Lightsabers Better Than Regular Lightsabers? It’s never explained why the crossguard design went extinct. On the one hand, the crossguard quillons help protect the wielder's wrist from being cut - and they can potentially be used as an additional weapon. But on the other hand, more blades means the saber is more difficult to wield; and those same quillons can slice the wielder’s hand off if not handled properly.
