Team owner/driver can see a day coming where at-track crew chiefs won't be needed at all.
NASCAR may soon be entering an era where crew chief can do their race-day duties from the comfort of the team's war room back at the shop.
With the technology that now exists in NASCAR Cup racing, at least some drivers believe that in the future a crew chief will make strategy calls during a race from the team’s war room back at the team's shop instead of from atop the pit box at the track. Brad Keselowski noted that when the pit cart was originally created, it was designed to contain the equipment needed to repair a car on pit road. However, now with NASCAR’s damaged vehicle policy there’s a time limit on repairs, the pit wagon’s function has changed. It’s now the hub for all of the team’s digital initiatives.
There has been a war room at RFK Racing for the last four or five years, but it has a new one this year because the team is updating its digital infrastructure. Most teams use their own proprietary software in their war rooms.
