Watson was facing 24 civil lawsuits accusing him of sexual assault and sexual misconduct during massage therapy sessions. Watson has settled 23 of those lawsuits, and now will be eligible suit up for the Cleveland Browns by Week 7 this season.
However, because the allegations involved"non-violent sexual conduct," Robinson ruled that she must follow precedent set by the NFL. She notes that, previously, the most severe penalty for"non-violent sexual assault" was a three-game suspension. "I am bound 'by standards of fairness and consistency of treatment among players similarly situated,'" Robinson wrote in her decision.
She added,"While it may be entirely appropriate to more severely discipline players for non-violent sexual conduct, I do not believe it is appropriate to do so without notice of the extraordinary change this position portends for the NFL and its players."
