Gov. Gavin Newsom’s campaign stepped into San Jose’s hard-fought mayoral race Friday to ask an independent political committee backing Matt Mahan to stop using Newsom’s image in campaign mail criticizing opponent Cindy Chavez on homelessness.
The campaign mail in question was sponsored by Common Good Silicon Valley, an independent expenditure political committee originally set up by outgoing Mayor Sam Liccardo to support various causes, and now is run by his chief of staff, Jim Reed. The mail in question says “Gavin Newsom has a plan for homelessness but Cindy Chavez is dragging her feet,” and features photographs of Newsom, Chavez, Mahan and a homeless encampment. “Cindy Chavez won’t stand up for Governor Newsom’s plan to get homeless people off our streets and into housing, treatment and care.”
Chavez has countered that she has a proven record of delivering on the issue, helping pass a $950 million affordable housing bond in 2016 and getting 20,000 people into housing over the last five years, in contrast to her opponent, a first-term councilman and former technology entrepreneur and teacher.
