Plus, why lanes are being added to Interstate 80.
Q: After driving to Sacramento recently, I wonder why they are adding a fifth lane between Fairfield and Vacaville. It seems unnecessary.A: Caltrans is adding extra merge lanes on Interstate 80 before the Bay Bridge and on 680 before Highway 24. These are busy interchanges, with lots of merging traffic.
Q: My wife told me I had to see what has been done to Hillsdale Avenue so we drove there recently. From about Meridian to Almaden Expressway, the road has been taken over by an army of yellow delineators in the median, a massive no man’s land of yellow striping, a platoon of white delineators on the right, and a bike lane big enough for the Tour de France. It appears a lane was sacrificed for the bike lane, and the white delineators block some right turns until you reach a cross street.
But the most maddening aspect is the median blocking intersecting streets without traffic signals that “T” into Hillsdale. You are forced to make a right turn, then hunt for a place to make a U-turn, which may be some distance away. How about spending that money to fix streets that so desperately need it? A pothole on Moorpark ate my tire recently, ruining my day, to say nothing of the tire.A: Hllsdale Avenue is one of San Jose’s 17 Vision Zero priority corridors.
