POLITICO Magazine invited a group of Republican campaign strategists — veterans of the brutal 2016 campaign — to watch both debates and tell us what they saw going on. Here's what they said:
Ten more Democratic candidates lined up Wednesday night to make their grab for national attention—or to take their potshots at frontrunner Joe Biden, whichever opportunity came first. As they faced off over the details of their health care plans, and tried to woo progressive viewers with their awakenings on crime policy, some viewers at home were watching with a very different filter.
Harris certainly took an immense amount of incoming fire in the first 20 minutes and while she didn’t stumble, she also didn’t come across as comfortable while litigating the all-important health care fight. And when the attacks in the 9 p.m. ET hour were heavily focused on Biden, she faded a bit into the background.
Although I listed Harris as a loser tonight—primarily based on the extremely high expectations coming in—and I believe that if she and Trump debated tonight the president would score a political TKO, there is no doubt that Senator Harris still has the highest upside as a debater among the Democratic candidates. If she continues to grow, she could be a very tough opponent for the president.
And so in that regard, the loser of the debate tonight was the eventual Democratic nominee, who it is clear will win only after being a victim of some aggressive friendly fire. Among the main contenders, I think any of them could beat Trump, but I don’t think any did themselves any favors tonight.
