BEIJING – China has signalled its continued support for Myanmar’s military regime, even as the latter’s hold on power looks increasingly uncertain.
Dr Zachary Abuza, an expert on South-east Asian politics at the National War College in Washington, said: “ knows how a government with military representation or dominance would behave and what policies it would pursue. Tensions between Beijing and the junta have grown, with China’s tacit backing of resistance forces, such as the Three Brotherhood Alliance consisting of the Arakan Army, Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army.
Mr Ye Myo Hein, a Myanmar conflict analyst, highlighted this dynamic in an Aug 14 analysis for USIP. Contrary to expectations that the junta will concede its losses in the north and consolidate control in central Myanmar, the junta will not do so, he said.
