Overtourism is now impacting nearly all holiday hotspots, with locals growing increasingly frustrated by the effect of visitors on their daily lives. In Spain, the problem lies in the escalating house prices and limited availability as profit-driven landlords opt to lease their properties to the hordes of tourists during peak season.
Upon arrival at this family-run apartment complex, I received the exceptional hospitality I had expected. Hosts who were willing to customise the breakfast buffet to our preferences, and offer us lifts into town when needed. Bars and restaurants hummed with a quiet busyness, and the luxury apartments, each with their own unique charm, featured swimming pools carved into cliffsides - perfectly positioned to enjoy those breath-taking sunrises and sunsets.
In 2022, Santorini and its neighbouring island Mykonos set the European record for overtourism, according to data from the German Federal Statistical Office. The very spot where I once stood taking sunset photos is now swamped with people doing the same thing on their smartphones. Back in 2018, I was one of about three people, but if I were to visit in June, July or August, I'd be one of hundreds.
