What happened to Marilyn Monroe’s last movie?
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Marilyn Monroe’s all-too-short movie career is one of Hollywood’s most iconic, but her unfinished final movie, Something's Got To Give, might not be as common knowledge. Officially, Marilyn Monroe’s last movie was the 1960 drama The Misfits, but in actuality, she was in the process of filming a new movie at the time of her death in 1962.
Plagued by a turbulent production, Marilyn Monroe’s last movie never actually made it to screens. With inconclusive reports on how much footage of the unfinished project still exists, Monroe’s last work is partially lost. However, despite the lack of footage of Something's Got To Give, plenty is known about its production, making it possible to piece together the real story behind Monroe’s last movie, including why it was abandoned and left unfinished.
The filming of Something’s Got to Give was paused after the firing of Marilyn Monroe to recast the role of Ellen. Though names like Kim Novak, Shirley MacLaine, and Lee Remick were in talks for the recast, none of them held a candle to Monroe according to Dean Martin, who had the final approval of his leading lady in the movie. Martin refused to continue Something’s Got to Give without Monroe, and thus she was rehired for the movie.
