A viral video of a moose shaking free its antlers raises the question of why the animals need such heavy headgear

Though it is not often witnessed by people, antler shedding, or casting, is a normal annual process formale moose, deer, elk, and other members of the Cervidae family, commonly called cervids. The only exception is caribou, or reindeer, in which females also grow and discard antlers.
