Why So Many House Republicans Are Retiring, And Why More Could Be On The Way

The retirements have come from very different corners of the GOP.

Iowa Rep. Dave Loebsack and New York Rep. José Serrano are retiring while New Mexico Rep. Ben Ray Luján is running for Senate. Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton and Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan are currently running for president and not included here, thoughthat one or more of them might not run for reelection even if their presidential bids fail.

FiveThirtyEight’s partisan lean metric is the average difference between how a state votes and how the country votes overall, with 2016 presidential election results weighted at 50 percent, 2012 presidential election results weighted at 25 percent and results from elections for the state legislature weighted at 25 percent.
