The particulars vary from place to place, but this situation—an established community in a changing environment—is actually a more likely fire risk than people moving into the wildland-urban interface. One recent study found that the number of Americans exposed to wildfires has doubled over the past two decades, mostly because of increased fire threat, rather than people moving to danger.
