A new HBO TWC, -0.07% documentary, “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley,” tells the tale of ill-fated blood-testing startup Theranos and its founder, Elizabeth Holmes, who allegedly cheated investors out of hundreds of millions of dollars before the company’s collapse in early 2018. Holmes has been called a narcissist and worse for her business dealings, but the documentary called attention to another issue: her voice.

Bizarre? Perhaps. But some women entrepreneurs, especially ones who are young like Holmes, may feel the need to alter their manner of speaking to be truly heard in male-dominated settings, said Jay Miller, a voice and speech coach in Toronto. Holmes, now 35, was 19 when she started Theranos.Lower-pitched voices are generally better-received in professional settings than higher-pitched voices, studies show. , a 2013 study from Duke University and the University of California found.

Speaking authoritatively can be helpful in these settings, Laura Purcell Verdun a speech-language pathologist and communication coach at Voice Trainer, a communication training center in Washington, D.C., said. But it becomes a problem when it sounds fake.
