Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has declined to testify before the Senate Appropriations Committee on his department’s budget, amid ongoing drama about his personal finances and the 2020 Census
, the panel’s top Democrat said Wednesday.
The secretary gave no public explanation for turning down the invitation for a routine hearing on how much money his department wants lawmakers to dole out in the upcoming fiscal year, ranking Democrat Patrick Leahy said in a statement.“Secretary Ross: You’re not an investment banker anymore,” Leahy said. “You serve the American people, and part of your job is to be accountable to Congress and the American people.
Ross testified earlier this month before the House Oversight Committee about the Trump administration’s decision to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census. Leahy said it is “a shame” Ross will not be testifying before the Senate spending panel and that he had planned to ask the secretary about “why he misled me” about whether it was him or DOJ officials who first pushed to add the controversial question to the 2020 count.of a more personal nature in the weeks since the federal government’s ethics office refused in mid-February to approve his 2018 financial disclosure report, citing an inaccuracy related to his previous stock holdings.
