“We’ll have a better feel for that at the end of spring training,” Friedman said of identifying a designated closer internally. “I think we definitely have guys that are talented enough to do it. So whether that is something we choose to do at the end of spring training I don’t know that. But we definitely have guys we feel very confident could handle it.”
In the past, a closer-by-committee approach was an admission that a team did not have confidence in any one reliever. But the prominence of analytics seems to have given rise to“I think a lot of it is a function of your personnel – the personalities, the track record,” Friedman said. “But every manager and coaching staff I’ve been around tends to prefer to have someone that they build a game to.
“That’s great if that’s what we ultimately do. But right now, there’s just enough up in the air about what the configuration of the ’pen will be. But I’m confident that Doc , Mark , Connor , Josh Bard will figure out what makes the most sense knowing the personalities and how best to deploy our guys.”
