'I turn 35 this September and I feel like we need to get on with it, especially as I've seen friends struggle to conceive,' says Kirsty. 'But now my boyfriend has been furloughed and we're not sure whether that might mean redundancy further down the track. My job is secure at the moment, but I'm on contract and that means no maternity pay, and we couldn’t survive without Nick’s salary.

'Lockdown could have brought tension and distress into a previously happy relationship, forcing people to revaluate their decision to become parents - or at least postpone it,' she says.agrees, and she is giving online help to many clients whose plans to have a baby have been derailed. 'With everything so unfamiliar, and a lot of us feeling like we’ve lost control of our lives, many people are reluctant to add any more uncertainty,' she says.
For all of us, the psychological impact of prolonged uncertainty is likely to be significant, and the repercussions for mental health will be complex and long lasting. But there is hope to be found in the darkness – and my dad might be right about that baby boom after all.
