For the past two decades, and particularly since hostile neighbours India and Pakistan announced their nuclear capabilities with multiple tests, it was commonplace to see South Asia described as the most dangerous spot in the world and a potential nuclear flashpoint.

More recently, thanks to the sustained nuclear and ballistic missile testing in North Korea and the threats issued by its leader, that dubious distinction had moved to the Korean Peninsula. Now, just as things seem to be on the mend in North Asia, South Asia is in focus again.
