Russia has extended its control over Ukraine’s southern coast and unleashed a bombardment of civilian landmarks, as ground forces encircled a growing number of cities.

Anatoly and Lyidmila Litvin have lived all their lives - 80 and 79 years respectively - in Ukraine. Their American-born son-in-law, Demetrius Glass and their daughter, Svitlana, evacuated last week to Poland. It took Glass and his wife 11 hours to get from Mykolaiv to the checkpoint at the Poland border. After that, it took them another three days to get through the border checkpoint. Sick children and women with their newborn babies stand at a basement used as a bomb shelter at the Okhmadet children's hospital in central Kyiv, Ukraine. Russian strikes pounded the central square in Ukraine’s second-largest city and other civilian targets, and a 40-mile convoy of tanks and other vehicles threatened the capital.

Glass and his wife are just some of the families from central Pennsylvania staring down at the Russian invasion. “We don’t want a refugee program,” said Slyusarenko, who lives in Mechanicsburg. “Our only goal is to get them here until it all blows over.”
