The projected Dallas Cowboys starting offensive line being ready for Week 1 of the regular season is in question with left guard Tyler Smith (hamstring)...
“I think it’s something that’s happened every year that I’ve been here,” right guard Zack Martin said. “Everyone who makes that roster has to be ready to play and we talked about it the day [Smith was injured] in our O-Line room. Hey, at some point this season, guys are going to need and step up and play. We’d love to have Tyler out there, we’ll see what happens. Guys are ready to go if he’s not able to.
If Smith is unable to play, Chuma Edoga is a possibility to start at left guard with T.J. Bass also in the mix. This is also the second consecutive season an offensive linemen was injured once the team returned from training camp on the West Coast.that cost him the first three months of the year less than month before the season-opener.
Now it’s Tyler Smith that could miss the season-opener at the New York Giants. One way to prepare for offensive line changes is making players versatile. It’s allowed Edoga, a tackle, to play guard and other interior linemen such as Brock Hoffman to handle center and guard duties. “That’s an important thing that we do here,” Martin said. “We’re constantly cross training guys who aren’t in that starting five. This happens in a NFL season. You’re going to use more than five offensive linemen in a NFL season. We just may Week 1.”
