Gracie’s owner, Anita Ahenakew, pleaded guilty under the Dangerous Animals Bylaw to owning a dog that attacked another dog, unprovoked.appealed the destruction order, alleging the justice of the peace did not consider other, less severe measures to prevent a future attack, and did not consider other mitigating factors, including her promise to keep Gracie permanently at home in her chain-link fenced yard.

According to a pet memorial in the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, Annie was a poodle mix who helped others grieving the loss of their companion animals at Family Pet Cremation Services. He concluded that the justice of the peace identified the nature and the risk to public safety in making his decision, and did consider other, less severe sentencing options when concluding that “the option of confining Gracie is not a guarantee that she will not escape. The prospect of Gracie escaping includes the risk that she will attack again.”
