'Colleges work hard to sell us a dream that doesn’t necessarily exist.' In this OpEd, a former RA talks about realizing that, above all else, colleges are businesses:
Kenyon College not only declined to recognize their student worker union, but evenasking the NLRB to dismiss and indefinitely stay the student workers’ union petition. that while the college put out a statement saying, “Hamilton supports the right of workers to choose what they believe is best for them,” administrators also “disputed their legal right to unionize in official statements,” according to the paper, citing NLRB documents that were recently made public.
I graduated from Barnard in 2015, and I got a wonderful education. I took classes from brilliant professors alongside extraordinary peers. But one of the most important lessons I learned is that while some colleges may be nonprofits, they still function like a business. The top priority always appears to be the bottom line.
Kenyon advertises with the words: “Whether you want to start your own club, create a housing community around a shared interest, or just try something new, you will have space to explore what matters to you with the support of your peers and professors.” Kenyon's motion for a dismissal of its students' union petition seems to say otherwise.
